Manopause Treatment By Dr. Shopana Ganpath
Just like women experience menopause, men undergo a similar age-related hormonal shift called MANOPAUSE, medically referred to as Andropause or ADAM (Androgen Deficiency in the Aging Male). While it’s not often discussed, it’s a very real and recognized condition caused by a gradual decline in testosterone levels, typically beginning in a man's 30s and becoming more pronounced with age.
Recognizing the Symptoms of MANOPAUSE: Think A-D-A-M
As testosterone drops, men can experience a range of physical, emotional, and cognitive changes. The acronym A-D-A-M highlights the most common symptoms:
A – Anxiety, mood swings, and irritability - You may feel more easily overwhelmed, less patient, or emotionally reactive. Some men describe this as "not feeling like themselves".
D – Decreased libido and erectile dysfunction - Low testosterone impacts sexual desire and performance, often leading to frustration or reduced self-esteem.
A – Abdominal weight gain and loss of muscle mass - Testosterone plays a critical role in fat distribution and muscle maintenance. A drop can lead to increased belly fat and a softer physique, even if your habits haven’t changed.
M – Memory issues, brain fog, and fatigue - Mental clarity may decline, and everyday tasks can feel more difficult. You might also feel chronically tired, despite getting enough rest.
What Can You Do About MANOPAUSE?
The good news? MANOPAUSE is manageable. With the right lifestyle adjustments and medical support, you can regain control of your health, energy, and vitality.
✅ Engage in Strength Training & Regular Exercise
Resistance training helps boost testosterone naturally, increase muscle mass, and reduce abdominal fat. Aim for 3–5 sessions a week combining weights, cardio, and mobility work.
✅ Eat a Testosterone-Friendly Diet
Focus on lean proteins (chicken, fish, eggs), healthy fats (avocados, nuts, olive oil), and complex carbs (vegetables, whole grains). Minimize sugar, processed foods, and alcohol, which can lower testosterone levels.
✅ Manage Stress with Mindfulness
Chronic stress elevates cortisol, which suppresses testosterone. Incorporate deep breathing, meditation, yoga, or simply take breaks during the day to decompress.
✅ Prioritize Sleep Hygiene
Men need 7–9 hours of high-quality sleep to regulate hormones. Stick to a consistent bedtime, reduce screen time at night, and create a calming bedtime routine.
✅ Consult a Healthcare Provider
If symptoms persist, see a provider who specializes in men’s health. Lab testing can assess hormone levels and determine if Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT) or other medical interventions are appropriate for you.
