Red Dye 3: Banned, But Still in Your Food & Medicine

Red Dye 3 by Dr. Shopana Ganpath | Internal Medicine

The FDA has officially moved to ban Red Dye 3, a synthetic food coloring that’s been linked to thyroid cancer in animal studies and associated with other serious health concerns. But here’s the problem — this ban won’t be fully enforced until 2027 for food and 2028 for medications. That means it’s still hiding in everyday products, including those marketed to children.

What Is Red Dye 3 — and Why Is It Harmful?

Red Dye 3, also known as erythrosine, has been banned in cosmetics since 1990 due to its cancer risk — but has remained legal in food and medicine until now. This inconsistency raises serious concerns.

Research shows Red Dye 3 and other synthetic dyes may:

  • Increase hyperactivity and behavioral issues in children

  • Trigger allergic reactions or sensitivities

  • Be linked to long-term health risks, including thyroid cancer

It begs the question: If it’s not safe on your skin, why is it still allowed in your food and medicine?

Where Is Red Dye 3 Found?

You might be surprised by how many everyday products still contain this additive. Common culprits include:

  • Candies, gummies, and fruit snacks

  • Processed baked goods and cereals

  • Children’s chewable vitamins and supplements

  • Liquid cough syrups and pain relievers

Even seemingly healthy or “natural” items may contain synthetic coloring — making it important to always read the label.

What You Can Do Now

The FDA’s ban may take years to roll out, but you don’t have to wait to protect your health. Here’s how you can take action today:

Read ingredient labels – Check for “Red Dye 3” or “Erythrosine” before buying.

Choose cleaner alternatives – Look for products colored with beet juice, turmeric, or paprika extract.

Shop local and conscious brands – At Glow Circle Frisco, we only recommend supplements and wellness products with clean, safe ingredients for our clients.
